Mrs. Alice Mae Davis, 94, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2026. Born in Chester County, SC., on February 7, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Albert Leon Davis and the late Mary Bernice Barkley Davis. She was a devoted and virtuous wife to the late Lewis Calvin (L.C.) Barber, Sr. She was preceded in death by her daughter the late Gerlean Barber Evans and 11 siblings. She was a devout Christian and faithful member of Red Oak AME Zion Church,

Survivors are one son, Lewis "Knox" Calvin Barber Jr. of Charlotte, NC; two daughters, Evelyn Joyce (Gene) Degraffenreid of Edgemoor, SC, and Dr. Stacey Barber of Rock Hill, SC; one sister Patricia Barnette of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren, Michael Barber, Lamar (Nykki), Brian Douglas, Shantel (Delveccio) Simpson, Jeffery Love, Calvin Anthony Love, Cherell Degraffenreid, Alicia Barber, Sydney Barber, Brandon Barber; and a host great-grands, nieces and nephews; a special cousin-in-law, Minnie Lee Agurs of Rock Hill, SC.

With hearts filled with gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we celebrate the life and legacy of Mrs. Alice Mae Davis Barber, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor, and faithful servant of God. While her passing leaves an immeasurable void, her legacy of love, faith, service, and grace will continue to live on through the countless lives she touched.

Alice Mae Davis Barber was the embodiment of kindness. She possessed a gentle spirit, a warm smile, and a heart that made everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved. She never met a stranger, and no one ever left her presence without feeling encouraged. Whether offering a listening ear, sharing words of wisdom, or simply sitting beside someone in their time of need, Mrs. Barber had a remarkable gift for making others feel seen and cared for.

Her love language was service. She faithfully cared for family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who crossed her path. Her kitchen was the heart of her home, where three home-cooked meals a day were prepared with love. Her hot biscuits, sweet tea, delicious cakes, and hearty lunches became legendary among the many "Edgemoor crews" who found not only nourishment at her table but acceptance and belonging. Generation after generation of neighborhood children found a second home under her roof, where laughter, love, and life lessons were always in abundance.

Although her formal education ended after the seventh grade, Alice Mae Davis Barber possessed a wisdom that no classroom could teach. Through faith, perseverance, humility, and unconditional love, she became the cherished matriarch of her family and a pillar of her community. She quietly encouraged others to pursue their dreams, celebrated their accomplishments, and offered unwavering support without ever seeking recognition for herself. She believed in people before they believed in themselves.

One of her most remarkable qualities was her unwavering grace. She never judged others and refused to speak negatively about anyone. She treated every person with dignity, compassion, and respect. Her life was a living example of the scripture, "Let your speech always be with grace." Those who knew her remember not only what she did, but how she made them feel—loved, respected, and inspired.

Mrs. Barber carried herself with poise, elegance, and quiet confidence. She believed that excellence was reflected in both character and appearance. She was a woman of standards, class, and timeless fashion, demonstrating that true beauty begins with a beautiful heart.

Her greatest devotion, however, was to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. A faithful and dedicated member of Red Oak AME Zion Church, she served tirelessly wherever she was needed. She faithfully ministered through the Red Oak Ensemble, the Usher Board, the Deaconess Board, and the Stewardess Board, viewing every act of service as an expression of her love for God. Her faith was not confined to Sunday mornings—it was evident in every meal she prepared, every child she embraced, every prayer she whispered, and every life she encouraged.

At home, she established a foundation of faith that continues to guide her family today. She reared her children in the knowledge of God's Word, grounding them in the timeless comfort and promises of Psalm 23. Through every season of life, she reminded her family that the Lord is our Shepherd, faithfully leading, protecting, and providing.

Mrs. Alice Mae Davis Barber leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured by accomplishments alone, but by the love she freely gave, the lives she nurtured, the faith she modeled, and the example she set. She showed us that greatness is found not in titles or possessions, but in serving others with humility, loving without conditions, and walking faithfully with God.

Though she has entered into eternal rest, her influence remains woven into the hearts of her family, her church, her community, and all who were blessed to know her. Her gentle spirit, generous heart, steadfast faith, and unwavering love will continue to inspire generations to come.
