Annie Mae (Stewart) Moffatt was born in York County, South Carolina, on November 24, 1931. She was born to Alberta (Kee) Stewart and Lurlie Stewart. Growing up, she attended Gethsemane Baptist Church and when school was not in session at Crawford School, she worked in the cotton fields. In the 1950’s, she relocated to Baltimore, where she married James Warren Moffatt. During her time in Baltimore, she worked at Johns Hopkins as a lab assistant. Having taken an interest in science, she took biology classes for adults at Baltimore City College.
Ms. Annie Mae raised her 3 daughters, Georgia Ann, Janice, and Yvonne, in Baltimore until she relocated to Brooklyn, New York in 1968. Once settled in the city, she quickly became active in the community by obtaining employment with the New York City Blood Center, and becoming a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. Ms. Annie Mae was a loyal member of Cornerstone Baptist Church for over 50 years. She loved singing for the Lord and continued to share that gift through the choir ministry.
Ms. Annie Mae worked hard to afford her daughters opportunities. After dedicating 28 years to the New York City Blood Center as a Research Lab Assistant, she retired in 1996.
She also loved cooking and happily served her church by cooking for many church events. She loved feeding her family and friends, often hosting large holiday gatherings in her Bedstuy apartment. Her potato salad was legendary at home, at work and with friends.
Annie Mae loved people. She was a caretaker for friends and neighbors in need. She also provided nursing care for her terminally ill family members, helping to ease their transitions.
Annie Mae loved traveling the world. She embarked on many excursions throughout the US, including Hawaii, Canada, the Caribbean, and many countries throughout Europe. Her friendship extended to those she met on her adventures to last throughout the rest of her life. She prided herself on being a hard worker, an honest human, a faithful follower of Jesus Christ, and the matriarch of her family, who affectionately called her “Nana”.
She spent her golden years between Maryland and Virginia, making core memories with her family. Annie Mae was preceded in death by her daughter, Georgia Ann Pobi, her sister, Larlee (Tootsie) Harper, and her granddaughter, Sasha Calder. She is survived by her daughters Yvonne (Sam) Calder of Virginia, and Janice (Bernard) Carver of Maryland. Her grandsons, Dwarn Carver of Alabama, and Dante(Yu) Carver of Tokyo, Japan. Her granddaughters Dominique (Taeonna) and Storm Calder of Virginia.
She is also survived by her 9 great-grandchildren: Dante, David, Diana, Kalel, Landon, Conner, LeVeah, Kara and Daenerys (Carver), and two great-great grandchildren David Jr. and Nova. She affectionately loved Semaj, her bonus
4-legged grandson.
Annie Mae shared a special connection with all whom she touched. She was the most selfless person, acting as a caregiver for her friends, family, and neighbors whenever needed. Above all, she loved. She will forever be part of our hearts.
