Arthur Barber was born on October 12, 1944, in New York, New York. He grew up on Commonwealth Avenue, in the Bronx, New York and attended public schools where he graduated high school in 1962. After high school, Arthur attended Norfolk State University in Norfolk Virginia, for two years before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in March of 1966. He served in the service for six years, including two tours in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal in March of 1972. Upon completion of his military service, Arthur leveraged that experience, working as a long-haul trucker before finding a job with the New York Sanitation Department, which he retired from in 2001. Not one to ever slow down, Arthur was very engaged in the community and gladly supported anyone in need. He never met a stranger as he was very outgoing, friendly, and comfortable talking to anyone. He was involved in Pop Warner Youth Football, Big-Brother, Toys for Tots, and various civic and community projects. Most notably, he was very committed to VFW Post 3746 and served in various capacities assisting with VFW affairs and charitable events. Arthur continued this commitment throughout his life touching and helping countless people wherever he was. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend and will be greatly missed. Arthur is survived by his wife, Sheila G. Barber; two sons, Corey (Caroline) Barber and Brian Barber; two stepsons, Shondale Gore and Albert Frazier, Jr.; two granddaughters, Caitlin and Ameila Barber; two step-grandchildren, Delicia and Shon Gore; a dear childhood friend, Burt Evans, Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, G. Anyone who knew Arthur can attest to the fullness of the life he lived and his joy in helping others.
