Bessie Glenn Mann, affectionately known as “Betty,” was born November 13, 1946, in Union, South Carolina, to the late James Glenn and Inez Giles Glenn. She was raised in Union and attended the former Sims High School. She later earned her GED through York Technical College, which was a major milestone that led to her desire to continue her studies in Early Childhood Development. Bessie worked as a Murata WinderOperator at the former Springs Industries Elliot Plant. She was known for her independence, determination, strong work ethic, and wonderful sense of humor. She took pride in carrying herself with dignity and in all that she accomplished.

Faith was a guiding force throughout Bessie’s life. She grew up attending Bethesda Baptist Church in Union and, after marrying Robert L. Mann Sr., became a member of New Zion Baptist Church in Rock Hill, where she sang with the New Zion Hymn Choir. Her faith shaped the way she lived and the values she passed on to her family: put God first, respect yourself and others, be kind, work hard, and help those in need.

Bessie and Robert L. Mann Sr. built a family that remained at the center of her life. She was the proud mother of Jackie Mann McCullough (Ken), Jan Mann Barnes (Marvin), Tara Mann, Robert Mann Jr. (Breeann), Shanndolyn LaTasha Mann-Springs (Anthony), Taneshia “Nina” Mann, and Latoya Mann. She was fiercely protective of her children and took great pride in the way they carried themselves. She taught them to live with dignity, make good choices, and always hold their heads high. Her love was evident in her presence, guidance, and unwavering devotion to her family.

Bessie was a gifted cook who loved trying new recipes and had a remarkable ability to taste a dish and recreate it. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading, and exploring new creative interests. She had a true green thumb and loved growing flowers and vegetables, often preserving and canning her harvest, so her family could enjoy fresh vegetables throughout the winter and spring. She loved Gospel music and singing, took pride in always being well dressed, and especially treasured her daily walks and conversations with her daughters Jackie and Nina.

Her greatest legacy lives on through the people she loved and the example she set. She taught strength, perseverance, dedication, faith, and the importance of family while demonstrating what it meant to work hard, stand strong, and lend a helping hand. Her sense of humor brought laughter, while her caring nature comforted and supported those around her. The values she lived by will continue through the generations she helped shape.

Bessie departed this life on August 14, 2026, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, at the age of 79. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Jackie Mann McCullough (Ken), Jan Mann Barnes (Marvin), Tara Mann, Shanndolyn LaTasha Mann-Springs (Anthony), Taneshia “Nina” Mann, and Latoya Mann; her son, Robert L. Mann Jr. (Breeann); her sister, Gracie Walker; her brothers, David Glenn and Eugene Glenn; her grandchildren, Darren Mann, Jadon McCullough, Dallas Barnes, Daray Barnes, Dylan Barnes, Brice Mann-Springs, Azer Mann-Springs, Zayne Mann-Springs, and Jah’quees Mann-Springs; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Glenn and Inez Giles Glenn, and her siblings, James Glenn, Noah Glenn, Douglas Glenn, Jessie Glenn, Joseph Glenn, Marie Jeter, and Helen Davis.

Bessie will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother, a faithful woman, a talented cook, a creative spirit, and a strong protector of her family. Her love, laughter, wisdom, and example will remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
