Obituary

Bettye Crockette Gathings, a beloved mother, grandmother, educator, and community servant, entered eternal rest leaving behind a legacy of excellence, service, and love. She was born Anne Louise on September 19, 1929, on Pinkney Street in York, South Carolina, to the late Marquita and Robert Crockette. At an early age, her grandmother lovingly renamed her Bettye, a name that would become synonymous with grace, strength, and influence. With her characteristic humor, Bettye often shared that her birth year was a mystery—some documents recorded 1929, while others reflected 1931—a detail she embraced with a smile.

After the untimely passing of her father during her childhood, Bettye was raised by her devoted grandparents, the late Reverend Robert Crockette and Louise Crockette. She spent her school years in Rock Hill, South Carolina, under their loving guidance, and her summers in New York with her mother, experiences that helped shape her broad perspective on life and culture.

Bettye was a proud graduate of Emmett Scott High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina. She continued her education at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in English and embraced her identity as a proud Bennett Belle. She later obtained her Master’s degree in Education from Winthrop University, and furthered her studies at Columbia University and Appalachian State University.

A lifelong educator, Bettye dedicated her career to shaping young minds and opening doors of opportunity. She began her teaching career at Emmett Scott High School and went on to become one of the first African American educators to integrate the public school system at Rosewood Elementary School. She continued her impact as a sixth-grade English teacher at Ebinport Elementary School and later served at Sullivan Middle School, where she concluded her remarkable career in education.

Bettye’s commitment to service extended far beyond the classroom. She was deeply involved in her community, serving for many years on the York County Public Library Board and the Rock Hill Planning Commission. She was also an active member of the Lit-Phi Civic and Social Club, always giving of her time and talents to uplift others.

Her heart, however, found its greatest joy in her beloved sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. A dedicated member of the Eta Alpha Omega Chapter, Bettye served in numerous leadership roles. She found her greatest fulfillment as advisor to the Mu Xi undergraduate chapter at Winthrop University, where she mentored and inspired generations of young women. Affectionately known across campus as “Soror Bettye,” she left an indelible mark on countless lives, whether one was a member of the sorority or not.

Rooted in faith, Bettye was raised in the church, where her grandfather served as a presiding elder in the AME Zion Church. She was a faithful member of New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church, where she sang joyfully in the choir, served on the Kitchen Committee, and was a member of the Owls Club. Her love for music was evident in her role as a founding member of the Ecumenical Chorale, where she looked forward each year to Christmas and spring concerts.

Bettye was united in marriage to the late John Arthur Gathings, Jr., and from this union came two devoted daughters, Gisele and Stephanie. Her love for family was immeasurable, and she poured wisdom, care, and encouragement into each generation.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory: her daughters, Giselle Gathings and Stephanie Haselrig (Michael); her grandchildren, LeBranden (Trista) Anthony, Vernon Shaquille (Alysha) Anthony, Nia (Emmanuel) Harrison, Mercedes Crockette Bouyer (Chris), Whitney Cain, II, Logan Cain, Robert Haselrig, and Taylor Willingham; her great-grandchildren, Giovanni Anthony, Liovan Anthony, Franco Anthony, Troy Willingham, and Jayce Willingham; her adopted daughters, Wakita (Derek) Barksdale and Necole Woodruff; her adopted grandchildren, Patience and DJ Barksdale; and her devoted best friend and cherished lunch companion, Irabelle Love, along with a host of extended family members and dear friends.

Bettye Crockette Gathings lived a life defined by purpose, service, faith, and love. Her legacy will continue to shine through the many lives she touched, the students she inspired, and the family she so deeply cherished.
