Mrs. Daphne R. Hicks was born on June 6, 1954 in Rock Hill, South Carolina to the late William D. Burris Sr. and Louise Burris.
She attended school at Emmett Scott High School and later graduated from Rock Hill High School, both located in Rock Hill, SC. Upon graduation, she worked at Klear-Knit as a quality control technician for 19 years. Following the closure of Klear-Knit, she was employed at Boy Scouts of America where she later retired after 28 years of service.
Daphne had a passion for spending time with her family, shopping, cooking, getting her hair and nails done, and supporting The University of South Carolina women's basketball team. She especially enjoyed creating memories with her grandchildren: Ava, Olivia, and Ace.
She was a dedicated member of Langrum Branch Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess, on the pastor's aide committee, and the hymn choir. Daphne was also a devoted participant in the senior missionary, Sunday school, and Bible study. She was a faithful member of Nazareth Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess, Sunday school teacher, and on the usher board.
Daphne will truly be missed by everyone whose life she touched. She took special interest in the growth and development of her nieces and nephews and many other young adults.
She was known for her sage advice, wisdom, encouragement, and tough love.
In addition to her father and mother, Daphne was preceded in death by her daughter, Millicent Hicks, and her siblings: Connie Burris, Monique Burris, Mary Caldwell, Linda Burris, Ellen McClain-Brown, and William "Bub" Burris, Jr.
Daphne leaves to cherish her memory; her beloved husband of 50 years, Joe L. Hicks, daughters, Shayla Stephens (Alvin) and Jordan Currence (Barron) both of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Ava and Ace Currence and Olivia Stephens; her siblings, Sarah Thompson, Mary Smith (Jesse), Carolyn Burris, and Sheila Burris all of Rock Hill, SC; her in-laws, Evelyn Lee of Norfolk, Virginia, Mattie Turnball of Queens, NY, Virginia Carvalho (David) of Hampton, Georgia, Rosa Lee Young, and Lorraine Glover (Ronnie) both of Rock Hill, SC; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
