Deacon Larry Watkins, Sr. was born on April 24, 1946 in Rock Hill, SC to the late Mr. James and Mrs. Rosa Mae Watkins.
Larry embarked on his faith journey at Weeping Mary Baptist Church in Rock Hill, SC, before relocating to New Hope Baptist Church of Greensboro, where he dedicated himself as a Sunday School Teacher. Later, he became a part of Gethsemane Baptist Church of Charlotte, where he served as a Deacon of Trustees. He further enriched his spiritual life at Progressive Baptist Church, where he also served as a Deacon.
Larry attended Rock Hill School District and graduated from Emmett J. Scott High School. After graduation, he attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he earned a degree in Engineer Welding and Fabrication.
Upon Completing his degree, Larry began his career with the Guilford County Police Department where he worked for three years. He worked as a master welder for Carolina Steele and Mecklenburg Iron. Her also worked as a Facility Maintenance Technician for Queens College and Sears as a manager for more than 20 years.
Larry's passion extended beyond his professional life. He found great joy in his involvement with the Masonic Brotherhood and took pride in leading his Boy Scout troop.
In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by one son, Derrick Watkins; four brothers, Charles Watkins, Robert Watkins (Bubba), William Watkins (Buck), and Marshall L Watkins; five sisters, Jennie Boulware, Ella Weise Mitchell, Eliza Mitchell, Annie Mae Chisholm, and Willeen Young.
He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Bobbie Jean (William) Watkins, and his children: Larry Watkins, Jr. (Donna), Shealton Watkins (Kirisa), Carlton Watkins (Shammica), Sharon Watkins-Jones (Antoine), Christopher Watkins, Chronicles Watkins, and April Watkins. He also leaves behind two sisters; Alfreda Brown and Fannie Canty, 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
