Obituary

Mr. Carl Guither Marshall, age 75, departed this life on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Born in York County, South Carolina, he was the son of Thomas L. and Annie Knox Marshall.

At the age of two, his family relocated to Norfolk, Virginia, and later to Virginia Beach.

A lover of learning, Carl earned his bachelor's degree from James Madison University, a Master's Degree from the University of Arizona, and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He spent his career in city administration.

Carl was regarded by many as a private, introspective gentleman who marched to the tune of his own drummer. He was a music lover of high-fidelity sound reproduction from a variety of genres, from hard rock to elegant jazz.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Thomas E. Marshall.

Survivors include a sister, Bessie M. Meeks (Alex George), of Rock Hill; sister-in-law, Ramona Marshall of Troy, Michigan; nephews, Kenjji Marshall of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Malcolm Meeks of Washington, DC and Justice Marshall of Troy, Michigan; niece, Kia Marshall of Troy, Michigan; and a host of cousins, including David Marshall of New York, Donald Hemphill of Asheville, NC and Cheryl Simpkins (Gary), Celia Miller, JW Knox (Doretha) and Herbert Knox (Ruby) all of Rock Hill.
