Deacon Edward "Mutt" McCrorey, 75, of 1356 Ogden Road, Rock Hill, South Carolina, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at Piedmont Medical Center. Edward was born on April 7, 1949, in York County to the late Alfred "Putt" and Sallie B. McCrorey. He joined Cedar Grove Baptist Church at an early age. After completing his academic studies, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on May 11, 1969. Edward's basic training took him to many locations around the world, allowing him not only to be properly trained but also to rise in the military ranks. His first stop was Duty Station Training at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, where he learned about Infantry Mechanics. He trained as a Track Vehicle Mechanic at the Marine Corps Supply Depot, Logistics Base in Albany, Georgia, rising to the rank of Lance Corporal T-3. Preparing for active duty, Edward was stationed at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California, where he received the rank of Lance Corporal E-3, but more importantly, completed his Jungle Warfare Training. Upon arriving in Vietnam, his last training assignment was at the Da Nang, South Vietnam 2nd Battalion Headquarters, where he rose to the rank of Lance Corporal E-4. On January 10, 1970, he received his charge to serve in the Vietnam War as a Patrolman and Mechanic. Upon his Honorable Discharge on January 12, 1971, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. After leaving the military, he obtained a B.A. degree in Business from Clinton Junior College. He went on to work for the City of Rock Hill Fire Department for over 22 years until his retirement. While Mutt was committed to his job, he was equally dedicated to his church, Cedar Grove Baptist Church, where he was ordained as a Deacon and also served as a Sunday School Teacher. His hobbies included faithfully working in his yard, repairing lawn mowers, and spending time with his family. He was also known as "Coach Mutt" to the countless young men who played for his Oakdale Green Dragons football teams. Mutt was a die-hard fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Braves, Clemson Tigers, and Rock Hill Bearcats. He also enjoyed playing baseball for the New Zion Chargers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Sallie McCrorey ; his brothers, Owens Pickett, Johnny "Crow" McCrorey, and Alfred "Alfa G" McCrorey; and his sister, Barbara Porter. Deacon McCrorey leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 40+ years, Evelyn M. McCrorey; three sons, Anthony (Patricia) McCrorey, Edwin (Tosha), and Keenan McCrorey; two daughters, Anton (Angelo) Douglas and Miya McCrorey, all of Rock Hill, South Carolina. He and his wife also raised Lakisha Banks, Marques "Pete" McCrorey, Jamaria, Aaliyah, Amaree McCloud, and Aubrell McClure, all of the home. He was blessed with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also cherishing his fond memories are his sisters, Margaret Pickett, Inez (Charlie) Chisholm, Juliet (David) Chisolm, Gayle McCrorey, Jacquetta (Robert) Sanders, and Mary McCrorey, all of Rock Hill, SC; his brothers, James (Isabella) Pickett of Charlotte, North Carolina, Claven (Debbie) McCrorey, Joe (Dawana) McCrorey, and Ronnie McCrorey, all of Rock HiLL, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
