Ernest P. "Sonny Boy" Massey

Mr. Ernest P. Massey was born on October 15, 1934, in York County, South Carolina to the late William and Martha Massey. He departed this life on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Glenn Massey of 66 years, one daughter, Hope Elaine Massey, his parents, seven brothers, George, Robert, William, James, Hezekiah, Frank, and Ronnie four sisters, Joann, Carrie, Martha, and Janie.

Ernest attended Emmett Scott High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He retired for Inland Corporation after being employed there for over thirty years. He was a dedicated lifelong member of Catawba Chapel AME Zion Church in Catawba, SC. There he served on several auxiliaries of the church as trustee, usher board, men’s ministry and the senior choir. He loved fishing (area ponds and deep-sea fishing), reading his Sunday school book, doing seek and find puzzles, and sitting on the front porch. He was a man who never met any strangers and would tell you a joke instantly. He
enjoyed making you laugh! Not to mention the love he had for football; his team was the Washington Redskins aka “The Commanders.”

To cherish his memories, Ernest leaves behind his two daughters, Tammy Massey Mitchell of the home and Michelle Hall (Leon) of Rock Hill; a son, Jackie L. Massey (Vivian) of Greenwood, SC; grandchildren, Christopher B. Mitchell of Charlotte, NC, John Corey Steele II, Car’lee K. Hall of Rock
Hill; one sister, Francis Bullock of Washington, DC; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
