Obituary

Mr. James Barber was born on June 27, 1933 in VanWyck, SC to the late Minnie Barber.

He was the youngest of four children. On Sunday July 5, 2026 he entered into eternal rest surrounded by his family.

He accepted Christ under the spiritual guidance of Rev. Matthew Browning. James was a loyal and faithful member of Gold Hill AME Zion Church serving as a Trustee of the Church. He demonstrated an interest in the appearance of the Church's property. He served as an outside maintenance keeper for many years until his health failed him. He used a push mower to cut the grassy area and the cemetery. James would carefully move the rocks that marked graves that did not have a tombstone, mowed and cleared the spaces and then returned the rocks to continue to identify the graves. He firmly believed everything should be done to honor the memory of those placed in our cemetery. James dropped out of school in the 6" grade to get a job to help support his family. He worked on a farm and then at Ashe Brick Yard. He later went to work at Textile Waste in Pineville, NC from there he drove a truck for Famous Mart Store in Charlotte, NC until he retired. James loved to work outside especially cutting down trees and driving his tractor. After retirement he loved spending Saturdays going to and from Flea Markets with his buddy Tina Adams. James was a Ford Man; he loved his Ford pick-up trucks and tractors.

James was joined in holy matrimony to Calvert Adams Barber and their union produced six children. He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Kelvin Keith Barber and three sisters;

Callie Hayden, Susie Harris and Louise Barber.

He leaves to cherish loving memories: one daughter, Carolyn Mangrum, sons: Wayne B. Barber (Madelyn); Dale S. Barber; Mark A. Barber of Lancaster SC and James D. Barber of Rock Hill SC. (11) grandchildren: Keischa Green; Melissa Branford (Maurice); Nerissa Foster; Brandon Barber; Donavon Barber (Zakiyyah); Shawn Mangrum; Anqunette King (Quinton); Tiffany Barber; Lorenzo Wells; Jermaine Wells and Antroyone Barnette; (20) great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
