A decorated military veteran, Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army as a paratrooper where he spent two tours of duty in the Vietnam War.
His family was important, but nothing was more important than his faith in God. Dad was a life-long member of Union Baptist Church. His faithful dedication to his church was evident through his service. He served as the former President of the Trustee Board, a member of the Brotherhood, former Sunday School Teacher, and a member of the Hymn Choir.
As a respected leader in the community, Dad served as President of the Boyd Hill Neighborhood Association for many years, and worked tirelessly at Metromont Concrete Company where he retired. the Bible tells us to "Love thy neighbor as thyself" Matthew 22:39 and he made it his passion to lend a helping hand. When his health permitted, he selflessly maintained lawns for elderly neighbors and offered support when needed. He was a hard working man.
You can always find Dad outside, whether it was in his yard, cutting grass, fishing, or just sitting on the porch. He loved his family and would do anything for them. At the family reunions, you could always find him under the tree citing fish out of the wash pot or making his famous delicious soup.
Dad was a rare being of whom we've had the honor and pleasure of having in our lives. Although he is gone, we will always remember his smile, his generosity, wisdom, encouragement, and the gentle head nod when asked about anything, He will always remain in our hearts and will truly be missed.
