Mr. John Lee Kirkland, beloved son, father, brother, and friend, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. He was born on November 6, 1945, in Rock Hill, SC, to the late Sidney Kirkland and Lillian Crawford Kirkland.
A proud graduate of Emmett Scott High School in 1964, John went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Army, receiving an honorable discharge in October 1974. After his military service, he pursued higher education at Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill, where he excelled academically. In April 1976, he was honored with the Dean's Prize in Social Science, and in May 1977, he graduated with an Associate's degree. John enjoyed a fulfilling career, contributing his talents to several esteemed organizations, including the Rock Hill Herald, Citizens Bank, Boy Scouts of America, and Allen Tate Realtors.
A lifelong Christian, John accepted Christ at an early age and became a devoted member of Mount Olive United Methodist Church in Rock Hill. His spiritual journey led him to serve in various capacities within the church, including the Nominating Committee, Finance Committee, Administrative Council, and as a former choir member. Outside of church, he was well-known in the Boyd Hill community for his passion for agriculture, spending over 30 years cultivating and nurturing a beautiful garden that reflected his love for nature.
John was preceded in death by his father, Sidney Kirkland; mother, Lillian Crawford Kirkland; and sister, Mrs. Hattie F. Long.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Brilton J. Berry of Rock Hill, SC; three sisters, Mrs. Robbie M. Barber(Rev. James
T. Barber) of Rock Hill, SC, Mrs. Lillie S. Bowen of Bloomfield, CT, and Ms. Doris A. Kirkland of Windsor, CT; a bonus sister, Mrs. Ada C. McRae of Rock Hill, SC; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
