Johnnie Mae “Nute” Belton

December 15, 1948 — April 5, 2025

Johnnie Mae Belton, affectionately known as “Nute,” was born on December 15, 1948, in York County, South Carolina, to the late Theodore Massey Sr. and the late Katie Clowney Massey. She peacefully transitioned from this life on April 5, 2025, at her home in York, South Carolina.

Johnnie was a proud graduate of Emmett Scott High School, Class of 1967 where she enjoyed being a member of the basketball team. She later earned her degree from York Technical College. She spent many years working at Celanese before retiring, and continued her legacy of care and commitment as a devoted teacher at All Smiles Child Development Center.

A faithful servant of God, Johnnie was an active and dedicated member of Mount Hebron Baptist Church. She served as the Mother of the Usher Board, President of the Missionary Ministry, and a cherished member of the Gospel Choir, along with many other roles. Her presence was a pillar in her church community.

Johnnie was a faithful member of the Prince Hall Order of the Eastern Star for thirty two years. During her membership, Johnnie served faithfully as Esther, Associate Matron and Worthy Matron of Daughter of Israel Chapter #313. Once her chapter closed, she took residence in Rose of Sharon Chapter #30 where she served as the Chaplain.  Johnnie served on the Degree Team, Burial Team and District Ritualistic Opening.  She was one of the fairest among thousands. Johnnie was also a devoted member of the African Protective Burial Society #23.

Johnnie was known for her generous spirit, her deep love for family, and her joy in bringing people together. She was a phenomenal cook and baker, and loved hosting family gatherings and celebrations. She also enjoyed bowling, but her favorite pastime was traveling and creating unforgettable memories with those she loved.

In addition to her parents, Johnnie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles Odell Belton, and her brothers: Theodore Massey Jr., John Willie Massey, and Leonard Roy Massey.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory her devoted son, Christopher Belton (Morianda “Drina”) of Rock Hill, SC; stepsons Ray Charles Lawyer (Diane) of York, SC, and Tony Belton of Charlotte, NC; and her two beloved grandchildren, Christopher Belton Jr. and Kierra Belton, both of Rock Hill, SC; and a host of other step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is also survived by her siblings: Katie Patterson (Sonny) of Charlotte, NC, and Carl Massey (Margaret) of Rock Hill, SC; sister-in-law Robbie P. Massey of Lancaster, SC; Uncle John Clowney (Josephine) of Rock Hill, SC; and a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. A special mention goes to her best friend, Bobbie Marshall of Rock Hill, SC.

Johnnie Mae “Nute” Belton was a woman of God, grace, strength, and boundless love. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
