Juan Massey, beloved son of James Edgar Massey and Marianne Irby (Massey) McGee, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, authenticity, and love. Born on June 23, 1963, Juan’s life was a journey marked by devotion to family, a passion for cooking, and a spirit that never backed down.
Juan spent his early years in Rock Hill, South Carolina, attending elementary and junior high school. He later joined his father—an active member of the United States Air Force—in Seoul, South Korea, where he completed the first two years of high school. Upon returning to Washington, D.C., Juan finished his senior year at Phelps Career Center, where his interest in vocational learning flourished.
Driven by his love of cooking, Juan pursued his dream and earned a Culinary Arts degree from Lincoln Tech in Washington, D.C. Whether preparing a meal or sharing a story, Juan had a gift for bringing people together.
Juan lived his life on his own terms. He faced every health challenge with the heart of a warrior—full of optimism and hope—never allowing setbacks to define him. His strength was quiet but unwavering, and he battled like a pro until his final breath.
Known for his straightforward attitude, Juan was determined to never sugarcoat the truth (or his version of the truth..lol). He loved you enough to tell it like it was, and those who knew him best understood that his honesty was rooted in deep care. His words could be sharp, but his heart was always open.
Juan was a die-hard Washington Redskins fan—bold, proud, and never quiet during game day. When the team changed its name to the Commanders, he took it personally. “They’ll always be the Redskins to me,” he’d say. Though he never quite warmed up to the new name, his love for the team never faded.
Above all, Juan adored his children. He spoke about Michael and Briaunna daily to anyone who would listen, his pride in them shining through every conversation.
Juan was preceded in death by his father, James Edgar Massey. He is survived by his son, Michael Simmons, and daughter, Briaunna Simmons. He also leaves behind his devoted mother, Marianne McGee; his sister, Jatana Felicia Mitchell, and her husband Donzelle; his brother, David Robbins, and his wife Niya—all of Rock Hill, SC. three nieces, two nephews, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and cherished friends who will miss him dearly.
Juan’s life was a testament to authenticity, love, and the joy of sharing what you love with others. His memory will live on in every honest word spoken, every meal made with heart, and every story told with love.
