Dr. Kenneth Alston passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, with family by his side in Pineville, NC, at the age of 74. Born in Rock Hill, SC, on May 28, 1951, he was the son of the late Lovett Alston Jr. and Ida Lee McQuillar Alston. Kenneth was a retired chemistry professor who had a deep love for research, nature, teaching, and cooking.
Kenneth grew up in Rock Hill and graduated from Emmett Scott High School in 1969. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from St. Augustine’s University and a PhD from Howard University. Throughout his academic career, he held teaching positions at USC Salkehatchie, Benedict College, St. Augustine's University, and Allen University. Among his many accomplishments, he worked at the National Institutes of Health and contributed to research on hematology and sickle cell anemia. In retire-ment, he dedicated himself to preserving the legacy of the public African American schools and cemeteries in Rock Hill, SC.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lovett Alston, Jr. and Ida Lee McQuillar Alston as well as his brothers, Lovett Alston, III and Manuel Alston.
He is survived by his children, Dr. Ebony Alston, Justin Alston and Dr. Daniel Alston; and his siblings Mazetta Alston, Rev. David Alston and Jacqueline McQuillar.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
