Mrs. Mary Ann Agurs Mackey was born on January 21, 1947, in York County, South Carolina to the late John N. Agurs, Sr. and the late Ella Bell Mobley Agurs. She departed this earthly life on Friday, July 26, 2024 at Piedmont Medical Center.
Mary Ann attended Emmett Scott High School. She was employed with Springs Mill in Fort Mill, SC, where she retired after thirty-two years. She worked at Aplix in Charlotte, NC for many years, and retired in December 2017.
Mary Ann was reared in a Christian home and was a faithful member of Tabernacle A.M.E. Zion Church, where she served on the Trustee Board, Stewardess Board, Choir Member, Class Leader, Women’s Ministry, Sunday School Teacher, and wherever else she was needed.
Mary Ann was a huge Dallas Cowboy fan.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, LouElla Agurs McCullough and Jacqueline Agurs Wylie; two brothers, John N. Agurs, Jr. and Joe Agurs; grandson, LaCharles Govan; and granddaughters, Daniella Govan and MeMe Howard.
She will be deeply missed by all who loved and cared for her. She leaves to cherish her fond memories, one son, James Mackey, Jr. (Emma) of Winston-Salem, NC; three daughters, Tammy Govan (Charles) of Sharon, SC, Beverly Stewart (Dennis), and Carla Darby (Daniel); grandchildren, Rodney, Markee, Jeremy, Sha’Rhonda, Darius, Amber, LaQuandra, Vantwan, Zariah, Kimberly, Shamera, Asia, and Ayesha; nineteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey Agurs (Linda) of Charlotte, NC and James Agurs (Cynthia) of Rock Hill, SC; sister-in-laws, Rosa L. Jones, Gurdine Mackey, and Diane Johnson, all of Rock Hill; brothers-in-law, Robert McCullough of Winston-Salem, SC and Sidney Wylie of York, SC; aunts, Ida Wallace and Annelle Barnette, both of Rock Hill, SC and Rosa Kerns of Charlotte, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews.
