Patricia Hinton Sims

Patricia Hinton Sims, 79, of 985 Southland Drive, Rock Hill, South Carolina departed this life on Friday, August 18, 2023. She was born in Rock Hill, SC to the late Mr. Sidney Hinton, Sr. and the late Mrs. Ola Dunlap Hinton.

She was a graduate of Emmett Scott High School, class of 1960. Patricia earned degrees from Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill, SC and Benedict College in Columbia, SC with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. She was an educator until her retirement from Rock Hill School District Three.

Patricia joined Trinity Baptist Church at an early age. She was a faithful member and previously served as an Assistant Youth Director.

Patricia was also a lifelong civil rights champion. As a member of the well lauded Rock Hill “City Girls”, she was a soldier for equality. Her brave actions contributed to moving Rock Hill’s civil rights movement forward through peaceful protests during the 1960s.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. James Henry Sims; three brothers, Mr. Sidney Hinton Jr., Mr. William Jerry Hinton (Mary), Mr. Larry Hinton; one sister, Mrs. Costella H. Gaither; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Floree Berry Shannon.

Left to cherish her memory is one daughter, Mrs. Avis Brown (Shamiek) of Charlotte, NC; two brothers-in-law, Mr. James Gaither Sr. of Rock Hill, SC and Mr. Leroy Sims (Gwendolyn) of Knoxville, TN; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary S. McDuffie (Roger) of Charlotte, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

The family of Patricia H. Sims conveys their deepest gratitude and appreciation for all acts of love and sympathy that have been extended to them during their time of bereavement. May God richly bless each and every one of you.
