Miss Peggy Jane Wright of 1156 Tom Joye Road, Clover, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, January 21, 2024, following a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was born on January 7, 1944, the youngest daughter of the late Mr. Benjamin J. Wright and Mrs. Mary Beaty Wright. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Miss Sarah E. Wright.
Peggy received her early education from the public schools of Clover, South Carolina, graduating as salutatorian of the Class of 1961 at Roosevelt High School. Following high school graduation, Peggy attended South Carolina State College, now South Carolina State University. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in library science in 1965 and obtained a master's degree in school counseling in 1970. After graduating college, Peggy was employed in the public schools of South Carolina and North Carolina, first as a librarian and later as a school counselor. She retired in 2005 after thirty-eight years of diligent service.
Peggy was a lifelong member of Jerusalem Baptist Church. She loved her church tremendously and was a dedicated and faithful member. Peggy willingly served in several capacities, including Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, Chair of the Trustee Board, church treasurer/ secretary, and member of the missionary society until her health no longer permitted. Peggy was also a South Carolina State University Alumni Associ-ation member and a member of the NAACP.
Family meant everything to Peggy. She took great pride in celebrating her nieces and nephews' everyday activities and significant accomplishments. Babies and small children always excited Peggy. Reading was a favorite pastime of Peggy's. She was a committed Bible scholar who read the scriptures daily. Traveling also brought Peggy great joy, and she loved planning trips for her family.
Peggy loved her family dearly. She leaves to cherish fond memories: one brother, Mr. Benjamin F. Wright; two sisters, Mrs. Amarintha W. Whitener, and Miss Ernestine Wright, all of Clover, South Carolina; one nephew, Mr. Michael K. Wright (Karen) of Rock Hill, South Carolina; two nieces, Mrs. Frankie W. Bennett and Ms. Millicent W. Dickey, both of Clover, South Carolina; three great nephews: Mr. Eric M. Wright (Shakree) of Rock Hill, South Carolina; Mr. B. Kelly Bennett and Mr. Ernest L. “EL” Dickey, both of Clover; four great nieces, Mrs. Erica M. Smith (Ryan) of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Mrs. Brandy A. Heyward (Timothy) of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Ms. Brittany K. Bennett of Rural Hall, North Carolina, and Miss Erin L. Dickey of Denver, Colorado; four great, great nephews, Mr. Eric Wright, Jr., Mr. Jordan Bodah, and Mr. Timothy Caleb Heyward all of Rock Hill, South Carolina; and Mr. Avery R. Smith, of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and six great, great nieces, Miss Jada Wright, Miss Josarian Wright, Miss Janae Meredith, and Miss Janai Meredith, all of Rock Hill, South Carolina; Miss Alivia Smith, of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and Miss Bailey Jerolamon, of Anderson, South Carolina; and one great, great, great niece, Little Miss Jaiyla Wright of Rock Hill, South Carolina. A host of loving extended family, friends, and church members also survive Peggy. She will be greatly missed.
