Theodore Cathcart, affectionately known as (Ted), was born on July 26, 1951, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, during the marital union of the late Mr. Booker T and Rebecca Smith Cathcart, as the sixth of nine children. He peacefully transitioned at the Atrium Health Pineville hospital on January 9th, 2025, at the blessed age of 73. He attended Emmett Scott High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Ted faithful supported his church as Sunday School Superintendent and Director of Youth ministries. He also taught Lay Servants Ministry classes for the United Methodist South Carolina district and co-founded the "Feeds the Kids" summer program. Beyond the church walls, he volunteered at local organizations, and led bible studies in his front yard, gaining the name "Uncle Ted" in his neighborhood. In his own words, "In 1998, I confessed my sins to God and was reborn back into the Grace of God's Mercy. Since then I have been on the battlefield for the Lord and telling of the goodness of the Lord in many churches around the Rockhill, Chester, and Lancaster areas. Once again this soldier for the Lord comes to you to tell what thus saith the Lord." Preceded in death by his parents, brothers Leonard Cathcart and James Robert "pj" Cathcart, and sister Azilee "Lee" Peterson, Ted's legacy of love and faith continues through his family and community.
He leaves behind his devoted wife, Athena Dickey-Cathcart, mother-in-love Doretha Nesmith; Daughters he adored from previous relationships Tiffany (Danny) Byers of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Shonie Cathcart Brooks of Lancaster, South Carolina two grandchildren, Skylar Ashemore and Evan Ashemore, of Charlotte, North Carolina; one sister, Betty (Isaac) Rucker of Aiken, South Carolina; four brothers:
Arthur B. (Denise) of Rock Hill, South Carolina; Rufus Cathcart of Rock Hill, South Carolina; John Beaufort (Carrie) of Catawba, South Carolina; Melvin (Janice) of Lancaster, South Carolina, Leroy Islom of Rock Hill; two sisters-in-law, Hilda Jones Cathcart of Beaufort, South Carolina, and Libby Cathcart of Rock Hill, South Carolina one brother-in-law: Vernon "Pete" Peterson of Chesapeake, Virginia. Adult children-in-love Tiffany-Autumn Bell, Lenny Dickey and Joseph Dickey, along side hosts of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Ted's life was a testament to God's power, redemption and service. He found joy in sharing his testimony and guiding those around him, reflecting Christ's light in his family, church, and community. Known for his kind spirit and unwavering commitment to helping others, Ted leaves behind a legacy of hope, love and an evangelistic spirit that will live in the hearts of all who knew him.
