Mr. Sammie Elmore “Honkey” Cherry, 81, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, entered eternal rest on December 1, 2024, at Mecy House. He was born on August 14, 1943, to the late Annie Eliza Dewese Cherry and Sammy Elmore Cherry Sr. She was the granddaughter of the late Lucy Pickett Dewese and Clarence Dewese Sr.; Susie Caldwell Cherry and Rufus Cherry. In addition to her parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary “Gail” Cherry and Janie Bell Dewese Irby.
Honkey Cherry was educated in the public school system. He joined the Nazareth Baptist Church at a very early age. Honkey retired from Canon Virginia, Inc. as an operator in Newport News, Virginia.
He leaves his precious memories to his daughters Latasha Cherry of Rock Hill, South Carolina; Cynthia Long of Charlotte, North Carolina; Ladonna Cox and Tammie Adams of Newport News, Virginia. Honkey Cherry also leaves his precious memories with his loving sister Alberta Chisolm of Rock Hill, South Carolina. Honkey had 11 grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren; loving niece and care-taker, Teresa Cherry and great-niece, Tera’Neshia Cherry Hough; nieces, nephews, cousins, a special friend with whom he shared memories with as well, Joann Griffin; a multitude of caring friends and neighbors.
Sammie “Honkey” Cherry enjoyed spending time with family and loved ones. In addition, Honkey loved to travel and be a jokester and also had a smile that would light up a room every-where he went. All will truly miss him dearly
