Tommy Barnette, lovingly known as “Tom” or “T”, peacefully departed this life on Monday, September 28, 2026, at the age of 68. He peacefully fell asleep in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father.
Tom was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He loved his family dearly, especially his children and grandchildren. He also had a deep love for music, which was one of the greatest gifts God blessed him with. Tom enjoyed playing his guitar, listening to music, watching football and golf, and spending time staying connected with the people he loved.
Tommy Barnette was born on January 15, 1958, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, to the late Robert Barnette and Janie Mae Belton Barnette.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Janie Mae Barnette; his wife, Renee Barnette; his brothers, Charles Belton (Johnnie Mae Belton), Sammie Barnette, Robert “June” Barnette, Freddie Barnette, and Dana Barnette; his mother-in-law, Barbara Erby; and his aunt, Luellen Jackson.
Tom was educated in the York County Public Schools and was a faithful and dedicated worker. He spent many years working with the Rock Hill School District at Castle Heights Middle School. He also worked at Harrison Toyota, ThermalKem, and June’s Car Wash.
A Gift of Music
Tom’s love for music began at an early age and became a lasting part of his life. He was one of the founders of the popular musical group Green Ice, which was established in the 1970s. Over the years, Green Ice had the opportunity to open for and perform alongside numerous musical groups, including The Commodores.
Tom’s musical talent was recognized at a young age. During one of his performances, members of The Commodores saw Tom on stage playing his guitar and expressed an interest in having him play with them. However, his mother would not allow him to do so at that time.
Tom was a gifted musician who could play several instruments, including the bass guitar, drums, and keyboard. His music was not simply a talent—it was a gift that he shared with others and used to bless those around him.
A Man of Faith
Tom became a member of Mount Hebron Baptist Church at an early age. As his love for God and music continued to grow, he shared his musical gifts with other churches throughout the surrounding community, including Foundation A.M.E. Zion Church and, most recently, Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.
Through his music and his presence, Tom touched the lives of many. His faith, his love for his family, and his willingness to share his gifts will be remembered by all who knew him.
Those He Leaves to Cherish His Memory
Tom leaves to cherish his beautiful memories his daughters, Krystal Erby of York, South Carolina, and Tomisha Erby of Rock Hill, South Carolina; his granddaughter, Tierra Hicks; his grandsons, My’Kee Hicks, Omari Minor, and Braelan Underwood; and his great-grandson, Kaycen Davis.
Tom loved his grandchildren dearly. He stayed in constant communication with them and treasured every moment he was able to share with them. The love he gave them and the memories they created together will remain in their hearts forever.
He also leaves his sister, Catherine Barnette of Rock Hill, SC; his brothers, Melvin Barnette (Evelyn), Larry Barnette (Deborah) both of Rock Hill, SC, and Ray Lowery (Diane) of York, SC; father-in-law, Tom Erby of Rock Hill, SC; four sisters-in-law, Isabell Barnette, Juanita Barnette, Denita Thompson (Franklin), and Karen Erby; special friend, Beverly Marshall; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
