Willean Poage Wilkes (January 9, 1945 - December 17, 2024), a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend. Willean was a gentle soul whose unwavering love, warmth, and kindness touched all who knew her.
She was the heart of her family, a guiding light who inspired others through her wisdom, faith, and enduring strength.
Willean was the devoted wife of John Thomas Wilkes, Sr., a loving mother to John Thomas Wilkes, Jr. (Michelle Wilkes) and Michael Allan Wilkes (Consuela Wilkes), whom she loved unconditionally and considered her everything. She was also a proud grandmother to Samuel Thomas Wilkes, Adrianna Wilkes, Andre-Michael Wilkes, Christian Wilkes, and Ximena Ann Wilkes, each of whom she adored deeply.
Born to her parents, Harvey Lee Poage, Sr. and Cleola Poage, Willean grew up with a strong sense of family. She was preceded in death by her siblings Cleophus Poage, Terry Poage, George Poage, and Joe Poage, but their memories remained dear to her heart. She is survived by her loving siblings: Ola Mae Rawlinson, Sammie Lee Poage, Sr., Harvey Lee Poage, Jr., and James Poage, and leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, numbering over 15, who loved and admired her deeply.
Willean was a proud graduate of Emmett Scott High School, Class of 1962, and furthered her education at Barber-Scotia College and Friendship College.
She retired from Rock Hill School District 3 in 2011 after years of dedicated service to her community.
Willean was a faithful member of New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church, where she served on the Usher Board and as an advisor to the youth ushers.
She was also a dedicated member of the Stewardess Board and the Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society, reflecting her lifelong commitment to her faith, community, and the service of others.
Willean had a love for life and found joy in the simple pleasures. She enjoyed sewing, bowling, creating ceramics, and shopping, always stepping out with a classy and stylish presence that reflected her inner beauty and grace. Her impeccable style and elegance left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
