It is with profound sadness that I share with you the passing of our beloved father, William Wherry Sr., who departed his loving family on Monday afternoon June 17th, 2024, at the age of 80. William was also known by many as Bill Wherry. William was born in Rock Hill, SC on November 18th, 1943, to Sam and Rebecca Wherry, he was one of eleven children. The Wherry children include James Thomas Wherry, Samuel Wherry, Alivia Wherry-Crawford, Willie Mae Francis Wherry-Johnson, Lillie Bee Wherry-Moore, Johnny Wherry, Mary Wherry-Moffatt, Charlie Wherry, and Richard Wherry (surviving brother).
William was married to Barbara Wherry for 54 years. William and Barbara met in New York back in 1965 raising three children, Gary Haley, James Page, and Diana Page. Later came two additional children Laura Wherry and William Wherry Jr. William was a great provider for his family. William’s wife, Barbara, passed November 7th, 2023.
After serving in the US Army for 4 years he settled in New York later working for the US Postal Service. He worked hard as a letter carrier for 30+ years of service. He worked for the US Postal Service in New York and in 1985 transferred to Rock Hill, SC.
William received numerous accolades for his performance while working as a letter carrier. He received a service pin of recognition for his 25 years of service to the Government, notoriety for his perfect driving record of two million miles with no accidents or tickets, and multiple awards for excellent attendance in 2004 and 2005. He was well known to the customers he delivered mail to over the years. He had an extraordinary talent for woodworking and created desks, bookshelves, tables, etc. He designed and created a doll house for one of his customers who felt extremely grateful for this gift. He would receive gifts from his customers on his route as a thank you for providing good service. William retired from the US Postal Service on May 31st, 2006.
William enjoyed relaxing on his patio, cutting his grass on his lawnmower, great at sewing and handy at repairing anything broken. His favorite was eating grits and eggs for breakfast and enjoyed eating meals made by his wife Barbara. He worked so hard providing for his family, he was so excited when after many years was able to pay off the mortgage on his home.
William’s final resting place location will be at Grand View Memorial Park Cemetery on Hollis Lakes Road in Rock Hill, SC. He will remain always in our hearts forever.
